Surfs Up, Puertocillo to Puchelemo - Chile

In honour of Chilean summer being on its way and Morris's birthday, we set off on a 4-day surf trip 250kms south down the coast to Chile's most famous 'secret' surf spots.
We camped in Puertocillo, a wild beach - with a famous point break left - for a couple of nights before heading to Puchelemo, home of Chile's BIG wave surfers. The crew was Morris, Angie, Christian, me and Pete... & little puppy Paltita.

Thankfully Puertocillo was a gorgeous, relaxed spot as sadly the waves were not out to play. We got a few surfs in, but no waves to shout home about. At least we had a lovely camp, bursts of sunshine, a bbq, Morris's birthday to celebrate (beers! pisco!) and good company. Loving a good run, I was sent on the booze run a few km's down the beach to the nearerest tienda. The swell coming from the Atlantic, we were surfing freezing cold with sealions again! It was not quite like my Costa Rica glory days, coming whooping into shore feeling Kelly Slater-esque. It was only when we got back to Ritoque, another surfer told me everyone knew it was impossible to catch a wave at Puertocillo on anything but a short board. Hey ho, bring on the warm Brazilian waters!

Driving a few more hours down coast to Puchelemo, the temperature dropped some more. Only the big boys were out to play. We were happy watching Morris & Christian from the comfort of our Ugg boots and camper van, tucking into the most yummy empanada's known to Chilean man. It was definately only for the hardcore but cool to see the best battling it out.

All in all, it was fab to see another part of Chile, hang out on the beach, make some parties... just a big shame about the waves dude!!!

  1. Other hostels do have age limits, and might give precedence to younger travelers, or exclude them, but most hostels will welcome guests of all ages, and will even accommodate small children and provide smaller beds and cribs if asked in advance.

  2. Beautiful Salta sits in northwest Argentina. You will tour at least a day of a bus ride from the amazing city of Buenos Aires. Bordered by mountains, the last few hours of your voyage will have the greatest view.
