Chile - Zapallar

Just two hours north of Santiago, is the stunning seaside village of Zapallar. Consistently voted into the top 100 most romantic places in the world, the place is as beautiful as it is magical. We went with Angie and Morris to thank them for their kindness and showing us such a wonderful time during our last three weeks at their hostel.

Angie told us the story of how such an amazing place came about, a rich Chilean industrialist owns all the land in the area and back in the 1920's he built his own European style house close to the picture perfect beach and near the small fisherman's huts. He was eccentric, wild and visionary - a true Chilean.

His rich friends came and saw the amazing cove and house, so he agreed to sell his friends plots of land with the covenant that they only build amazing homes in a European style. In just 70 years architectural wonders sprung up, which must be one of the highest concentrations of amazing buildings anywhere in the world.
Today it's a fairytale place; summer houses used by rich Santiagans, no stray dogs on the beach, no graffiti, no tide marks or broken bottles - just clean sands and a plethora of the best restaurants in Chile. We ate at one of them, gorged on crab souffle, seafood broth and margarita's. What a lovely way to say goodbye to Chile and our new friends...
